These rights are established in legislation such as the WGBO (Medical Treatment Agreement Act) in the Netherlands and the Patient Rights Act in Belgium. Governments ensure these rights are upheld and that discrimination is prevented.

    clear explanation about your health, treatment, choices, and consequences.

  • Right to informed consent:
    any examination or treatment only takes place with your informed consent; you also have the right to say “no.”

  • Right to self-determination:
    the right to make your own decisions about your body and care, including refusing treatment.

  • Right to privacy and confidentiality:
    medical information is confidential and may not be shared without permission.

  • Right to access and correct your medical file:
    you have the right to view, copy, and request corrections to your medical records.

  • Right to quality care:
    you are entitled to high-quality and respectful care.

  • Right to freedom of choice:
    you may choose your own healthcare provider and pharmacy.
