Drug and alcohol addiction

Addiction can take many forms, but the impact is often the same: loss of control, inner unrest, and disconnection from yourself and others. Below you can read more about the most common forms.

Drug and alcohol addiction

Addiction to drugs or alcohol often develops gradually. What may start as relaxation or escape can grow into dependence that increasingly affects your life.

You may notice that you are losing control, that you need more to feel the same effect, or that you continue using despite negative consequences for your health, relationships, or work. Feelings of shame, restlessness, or emptiness may increase, while stopping becomes more difficult.

At Rebuild Yourself, we look beyond just the use itself. We focus on the underlying causes of addiction — such as stress, trauma, patterns, and emotions — and guide you step by step towards recovery.

In a safe and structured environment, you work on:

  • physical recovery
  • mental calm
  • breaking old patterns
  • building a new, stable life

Recovery is possible. With the right guidance, environment, and commitment, you can regain control of your life.

Online gambling

Online gambling is considered one of the fastest-growing and most concerning forms of addiction, especially since the legalization of the online gambling market in October 2021.

As a result, (online) gambling addiction is among the fastest increasing addictions. The number of people seeking help for gambling-related problems is rising. At the same time, the online gambling market continues to grow rapidly — both in the number of players and the intensity of gambling behavior.

Facts and trends
Concerning increase

Since 2023, there has been a clear rise in the number of people seeking treatment for gambling addiction. The percentage of online gamblers has increased from 10% to 12% of the Dutch population (March 2024 – March 2025).

Young people are especially vulnerable
The number of young people aged 16 and 17 who gamble online has risen significantly in 2025, from 12% to 20%, despite the fact that online gambling is legally prohibited for minors. Around 18% of people receiving treatment for gambling addiction are under the age of 25.

Why online gambling can be highly addictive

  • high speed of play (no waiting times)
  • constant availability (24/7)
  • easy access via smartphones and tablets
  • intensive marketing and advertising

The fast, digital environment increases impulsive and risky behavior.
